Abstract

The electrochemical behaviour of 2-hydroxy-5-methyl benzophenone isonicotinoylhydrazone (HMBPINH) has been studied in Britton-Robinson buffer solutions of pH 2.1 – 10.1. The compound exhibits two polarographic waves at pH 2.1 and 4.1 while a single wave is observed at pH 6.1, 8.1 and 10.1. The waves are found to be diffusion controlled and irreversible. In contrast to two waves observed in the polarographic studies three peaks are observed in the cyclic voltammetric studies at pH 4.1. Similarly in contrast to a single wave observed at pH 8.1 two peaks are observed in cyclic voltammetric studies. Coulometric studies indicated the involvement of eight electrons in the reduction process. These waves are attributed to the four electron reductive cleavage of N-N bond and four electron reduction of amide formed by the cleavage of N-N bond.
