Abstract

A bidentate ligand (NS type) with benzodiazole moie ty has been synthesized by the condensation of 2- thiophenecarboxaldehyde with o-phenylenediamine. Co mplexes of type [ML 2 ] ⋅ 2H 2 O (M = Cu (II), Zn (II), Co (II), Cd(II) and Ni(II)) have been derived from the ligan d. The entire complexes have been characterized usi ng UV- Vis, FT-IR, 1 H NMR, Mass, TG-DTA and powder XRD techniques. The stoichiometry and geometry of the complexes were predicted based on the results obtai ned from the above analyses. Furthermore, all the m etal complexes were screened for their in vitro biologic al activity against four bacterial strains viz., Sa lmonella typhi, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginos a and Escherichia coli and four fungal strains viz. , Candida albicans, Rhizopus sp., Aspergillus fumigatus and M ucor sp. by disc diffusion method.
