Abstract

The Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC) was drafted under the auspice of the International Labour Organisation (ILO). Pursuant to Article VIII (3), the Convention should come into force within a year after the ratification by the thirtieth State and when the total share of the gross tonnage of ships reaches thirty-three per cent. Such goals have now achieved and the Convention is scheduled to come into force on 20 August 2013. This article aims at raising awareness of international community on this new piece of international agreement.
