The effect on aquatic ecosystems of river type hydroelectric power plants: the case of Trabzon-Turkey

Abstract

It is known that the river type hydroelectric power plants (HPP) are clean and renewable, low operating and maintenance expenses, due to the physical life of being a long coal, natural gas and petroleum as the energy produced by fossil fuels is less environmental impact. In addition, during the construction and operations, it can not be ignored effects on the aquatic ecosystem. In the Eastern Black Sea region, over 430 river-type HPP project is planned. In this study, 19 HPP project in Trabzon, according to environmental impact assessment (EIA) reports and construction and operation phases by examining the visual dimension it were examined and photographed. In the EIA reports, aquatic organisms and aquatic ecosystem impacts might given only in literatüre. Two project was conducted in field study. The construction stage; it is the biggest hazards excavations at random leaving stream beds, occupation of the river bed and river bed. During the working, a sufficient amount of life left in the amount of water and fish passages at random by building a sustainable aquatic ecosystem functions to fulfill the exact terms of a significant threat.
