Abstract

Copper (II) acetate and copper (II) dichloroacetate complexes of 2,2¢- bipyridyl (L1) and 1, 10- phenanthroline (L2) were synthesized. They were characterized b·y elemental analyses, IR spectra, thermal analyses, magnetic moment measurement and electronic spectral data. They were found to have the following compositions: [Cu (OAc)2]·2H2O, [Cu (OAc)2]·4H2O, [Cu (DCA)2]·2H2O and [Cu (DCA)2]·2H2O where L1=2,2¢- bipyridyl (bipy), L2 = 1, 10- phenanthroline (Phen), OAc = acetate and DCA = dichloroacetate respectively. The complexes were found to be six co-ordinated and possess octahedral geometry. Thermal parameters such as activation energy (Ea*), enthalpy change (DH) and entropy change (DS) for dehydration and decomposition reactions of the complexes, were evaluated. The order of stability of the complexes (with respect to Ea*) was also compared.
