Abstract

Present work deals with synthesizing novel Chalcones using acetophenone with different types of benzaldehyde derivatives using Claisen-Schmidt reaction. A mixture of acetophenone and aryl aldehydes were dissolved in methanol and to it 40%KOH was added. The mixture was kept for 24hours and it was acidified with 1:1 HCl and water, then it was filtered through vacuum by washing with water. Synthesized chalcones were characterized by physical and spectral analysis (by IR) and have been screened for their antimicrobial activity against the gram positive and gram negative organisms along with anti-inflammatory activity.Synthesized chalcone derivatives 3a-3e showed significant broad spectrum antibacterial activity when compared with standard drug Streptomycin. Coming to anti-inflammatory activity, Diclofenac will be used as reference drug. 4-Chloro benzaldehyde chalcone (3b) shown highest percentage of inhibition compared to other derivatives.
