Abstract

A series of chalcone derivatives of biological interest were prepared, by Claisen–Schmidt condensation of appropriate acetophenones with aromatic aldehydes in the presence of aqueous sodium hydroxide and ethanol at room temperature. The synthesized compounds were characterized by means of their IR, 1H-NMR spectral data. Thirteen chalcones were evaluated for antimicrobial (antibacterial and antifungal) activities against some selected pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli) and fungi (Candida albicans, A. niger, P. chrysogenum). Amongst the 13 compounds screened, compounds 1, 3, 4 and 9 exhibited antibacterial activity and compounds 1, 2, 3, 9 and 13 exhibited promising antifungal activity
