Abstract
Carissa carandas is used in traditional medicinal s ystem for its various diseases curing property. Ext raction of dried fruits of Carissa carandas were carried out w ith petroleum ether and methanol. The methanol extr act and petroleum ether extract were selected for performin g antioxidant activity. Here we have performed var ious in-vitro antioxidant assays including DPPH, metal chelating, H 2 O 2 , super oxide, anti- lipid peroxidation of petroleu m ether and methanol extracts from the selected fruit. The methanol extract have showed strong antioxidant act ivities when compared with petroleum ether extract, which were c orrelated with its high level of phenolic and flavo noid. The extract possesses more phenolic and flavonoid conte nt that causes the antioxidant activity. Generally antioxidant capacity of plant extracts was attributed to second ary metabolites present in it. Therefore evaluation of % inhibition by a single method may not provide proper result.
