Abstract

Phytochemical analysis of the dried leaves of Taebe rnaemontana coronaria (Apocynaceae) indicates the p resence of a steroids, tannins, saponins, alkaloids and reduci ng sugars. The Phamacological interest of these com pounds coupled with the use of this plant is traditional m edicine promoted the authors to check for its possi ble antimicrobial activity. The extracts (pet ether, chloroform and e thanol) were found to possess maximum activity agai nst infectious pathogens. The zone of inhibition was observed with four antimicrobes with some exceptions. The obtain ed results provide a support for the use of this plant in trad itional medicine and its further investigation.
