Abstract

Abstract A cigarette says –Today you turn me into ashes, but tomorrow is my turn” Tobacco has been in usage from time immemorial. Its ease of availability and unrestricted usage has caused a catastrophe. Tobacco is the most addictive substance known and it is the highest global threat. Background studies indicate that 1.3 billion people use tobacco in some way. It can be used in different ways, causing diseases more than any contributing factor. The purpose of the study is based on review of literature to create a global awareness for discouraging the use of tobacco. Detailed analysis was done on research papers that were published in last 10 years highlighting the disease conditions and fatality caused. Results that were obtained were alarming which showed tobacco caused 16 different types of cancer. It is the leading cause of cardiovascular disease and death. Second hand smoke kills 600,000 people a year. Smoking is directly linked primary risk factors in diabetes and hypertension. Smokeless tobacco can have disfiguring effects by causing oral cancer. It is the major risk factor n tuberculosis accounting to 22% globally and 40% in India. Tobacco has deleterious effect in pregnancy and child birth. Tobacco was found to be the front-runner in causing oral, systemic and the leading etiological factor for communicable and non-communicable diseases. Biography: Vineet Daniel Alex completed his Masters in Oral Medicine and Maxillofacial Radiology from Saveetha Dental College in 2008 Saveetha University. He was the consultant Dental surgeon of International cancer centre and holds a Diplomate in Laser Science from University of Genova, Italy. Presently he is a Professor in the teaching faculty of Annoor Dental College & Hospital, Muvattupuzha . He is also the Consultant Maxillofacial Radiologist in Annoor Advanced Maxillofacial Imaging Unit Vineet is actively involved in researches and delivered lectures in International and National Conferences .
