Abstract

A new spectrophotometric method was developed for the determination of clobetasol propionate in pure and pharmaceutical dosage form. The method involves the use of triphenyl tetrazolium, tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide, toluene as a new chromogenic reagent for the determination of clobetasol propionate. The method is based on the formation of coloured adduct triphenyl formazan between the clobetasol propionate and chromogenic reagent. Beer ‘s law is obeyed in the concentration range of 5-25μgmL-1 for clobetasol propionate at 523nm. The molar absorptivity, sandell’s sensitivity, correlation coefficient regression equation, and significance of F value were also calculated. The method has been suceessfully applied for the determination of clobetasol propionate in pharmaceutical ointments with acceptable results.
