Abstract

The use of colored semiconductor like bismuth sulphide (Bi2S3) as photocatalysts in photocatalytic degradation of malachite green was investigated in detail. In order to harness solar energy, the effective wavelength of the photocatalyst is to be expanded into the visible region and that increases the rate of photocatalytic degradation of the dye. Progress of the reaction was recorded spectrophotometrically. The effects of various parameters like concentration of dye, pH, amount of semiconductor, light intensity etc. were studied. A tentative mechanism for the photocatalytic degradation of malachite green has also been proposed
