Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop oro-dissolving formulations of Emblica Officinalis extract by different techniques, for providing suitable formulation for better effect and improved patient compliance. Oro dissolving formulations provide faster and complete absorption of the drugs in the buccal cavity (pH 6.7 - 7.4), which can enhance the overall bioavailability. The extract of the dried fruits of Emblica was obtained by cold maceration and hot decoction methods. The components present in the extract were checked by GC-MS technique, wherein 16 different compounds were identified. The formulation approaches selected in this work includes tablets by Liquisolid technique, Soft lozenges and Chewable lozenges, to optimize a formulation that may be suitable for commercial application. The technique used for formulating tablet and lozenge are liquisolid compaction and molding method respectively. The formulations are subjected to various quality control evaluation tests such as weight variation, uniformity of drug content, diameter and thickness, hardness, friability and disintegration tests, and the results were found to be within the standard quality limits of pharmacopoeia. The soft lozenges prepared using PEG was found to optimized showing uniform average weight of 760 mg, disintegration within 5 minutes and the dissolution studies with maximum percentage of drug release at minimum period of time.
