Impact of diabetes on quality of life and mortality of older people: A systematic review and meta- analysis

Meron Taye

Abstract

A number of studies have been conducted on the impact of diabetes on quality of life and mortality among older people. However, the results are fragmented. Therefore this review aimed to collate the available evidence on the quality of life and all-cause mortality of older people with diabetes. A literature search was undertaken for studies on quality of life and all-cause mortality among older type 2 diabetes patients. Study eligibility was assessed using criteria including use of quality of life and/ or mortality as outcome measures; and inclusion of study subjects aged ≥65 years or sub-analysis on this age group. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. The pooled effects of diabetes on all-cause mortality were calculated using a random-effects model with a 95% confidence interval (CI). A total of 22 studies met the inclusion criteria, nine of which were included in the meta-analysis.
