Abstract

Rifampicin is a derivative of rifamycin; an antibacterial and antifungal agent used in the treatment of mycobacterial infections, actinomycosis and histoplasmosis. Drugs formulated as suspensions are more bioavailable compared to tablets and capsules and also more effective than tablets (or) capsules in the paediatric and geriatric patient population (easier to swallow). In order to overcome the problem of bitter taste, degradation and sedimentation, the various trails of rifampicin oral suspension were developed by dispersion method using four different suspending agents and then it was evaluated for their physico-chemical parameters. Based on these preliminary studies, the selected rifampicin oral suspension was subjected to further analysis such as particle size analysis, assay, preservative efficacy test, accelerated stability studies etc.
