Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the hypoglycemic activities of the n-butanolic extract of Genista quadriflora Munby (GQBE) in both normal and diabetic rats. Our results revealed that the GQBE (100 mg/Kg, 150 mg/Kg) reduce blood glucose levels in normal as well as alloxan (150 mg/Kg) induced diabetic rats in a time and dose dependent manner, the maximum reduction was recorded at 14th day. The anti-diabetic effect of GQBE was also associated with the amelioration of alloxan altered parameters. GQBE has proved a good prevention of liver glycogen depletion, good restoration of ALT, AST andHb levels. GQBE with a large amount of flavonoids was found to possess a potent antioxidant activity (OH° scavenging and Iron chelating effect). Based on these results, we can speculate that GQBE exhibit a good diabetic management and couldbe an effective alternative therapy for diabetic patients.
