Effect of nursing intervention program on improving mothers’ knowledge and practice about attention deficit hyperactivity and reducing the symptoms among their children

Abstract

A convenience sample of 60 mothers of school age children who suffering from ADHD and their children presented in child psychiatric unit and pediatric out patient's clinics at Menoufia University. The sample divided into two groups; experimental and control group (30mothers and their children for each group). A quasi experimental (two groups pre/ posttest) research design was used to achieve the purpose of the study. Tools: I)Structured questionnaire sheet which including four parts; 1, 2) Biosocial data related to ADHD school age children and related to mothers; 3) mother’s awareness about ADHD; 4) Alabama parenting Questionnaire. II) The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders -5 th edition (DSM-5) scale to detect the behaviors of ADHD and to define the three nominal subtypes of it. Findings: The study revealed that there was significant differences between mean scores levels of mother's Knowledge and practice of about ADHA pre and post intervention. Concerning child symptom, there was statistical difference mean scores levels as regards symptoms of ADHD as reported by children’s mother pre & post nursing intervention program
