Abstract

Statement of the Problem: Persons with dementia are typically viewed through the lens of their deficits, instead of their remaining skills, strengths and abilities. The care provided for persons with dementia is often based on what the person cannot do, instead of considering the basic human needs of the individual and how to best promote autonomy and encourage creative expression. This interactive workshop will include experiencing a 29-minute documentary, From the Valley of the Heart, which shows how a mullti-disciplinary arts project utilized Shakespeare, poetry and music to stimulate creativity, spirit and memory for persons living with dementia. Workshop participants will experiment with tools and techniques that can help mine and promote the interests, strengths and spirit of persons with dementia.
