Challenges of Sustainable Tourism

Abstract

Challenges of Sustainable Tourism In the 15 years since the publication of Agenda 21 for the Travel and Tourism Industry, sustainability has become a commonly used term. Indeed, the concept of sustainable tourism has moved beyond the narrowly defined concept of ecotourism to embrace all aspects of tourism. Nevertheless, the implementation of sustainable tourism (ST) practices are far from universal and researchers, such as Hall and Ruhanen, have expressed frustration at the slow pace of change. As we move further into the second decade of the 21st century it is worthwhile to consider three of the challenges in implementing sustainable tourism policies.
