A study on pharmacognostic and chemomicroscopic features of Streblus asper L.

Abstract

Traditional medicines are gaining significant importance due to their easy availability and potency in different ailments and plants are the main basis of this traditional medicine system. Streblus asper L. (Moraceae) is a popular name in herbal world and is commonly found in Asian countries. Root bark and stem bark of this plant has been reported for its potential antimicrobial and antiviral activities. The leaf part has not been explored widely, so the present study is focussed on the pharmacognostic and chemomicroscopic features of this particular part. The study revealed the presence of small striated petioles and leaves with reticulate venation. Rosette type Calcium oxalate crystals were predominant. Anisocytic stomata, unicellular covering trichomes were observed. Physicochemical parameters such as moisture content, total ash, water soluble ash, acid insoluble ash, alcohol soluble extractive value, loss on drying were studied and presented. Qualitative fluorescence analysis has been performed. The results of the studies could be helpful for setting diagnostic profile for preparation of identification monograph of the particular plant as a source of information.
